Deep Sea ‘Aliens’ That Live In Twilight Zone Below The Ocean Captured In Incredible Pictures

These incredible pictures reveal the translucent and electric-hued sea creatures that roam 1,200 metres (4,000ft) below the surface of the Earth’s seas. Photographers used specialist camera equipment to capture the alien-like animals which have been seen only a handful of times. Most appear to have see-through skin which helps camouflage them in the brutal habitat where light cannot even reach.

The animals were found at depths of up to 1,200m (4,000ft) before being photographed by Solvin Zankl, 45, of Kiel, Germany. They were able to observe them in their natural habitat using a video sledge, which which is made up of a high-definition video camera and LED lights.

Mr Zankl had to photograph the larger animals using a tank and was had just one chance to photograph them.

He said: “Although biodiversity can be quite high, the density of individuals is often low and there is only this one fish of its kind in a haul – so I only get one chance to document it. I had multiple tanks of different sizes on board. The largest tank had a volume of 60 litres which I used for big and motile animals for example some squids and fish but I also brought smaller bowls for smaller creatures like some crustaceans.”
