Amazing Portraits of Grace Jones, The Pop Icon of the 1980s

1980s Grace Jones Portrait 1

Grace Jones, celebrating her 76th birthday today, has always embodied a unique aesthetic vision. Collaborating with French creator and ex-partner Jean-Paul Goude, Jones’s Afrofuturist image is as defining as her sultry contralto and provocative stage presence. Her Cubist fashion, close-cropped hair, and dramatic makeup have cemented her as a beauty icon.

Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and raised in upstate New York, Jones shaved her head in the late 1960s, aiming for a more abstract look. In 1970, she moved to Paris, rising to fame with her avant-garde style, modeling for Yves Saint Laurent and Kenzo, and shaping her buzzed hair into geometric designs.

From her debut album Portfolio (1977) to her disco nights at Studio 54, Jones’s look featured Technicolor makeup and bold features. Throughout the ’80s, with hits like “Pull Up to the Bumper” and “Slave to the Rhythm,” she continued to push beauty boundaries, also making iconic film appearances in A View to a Kill (1985) and Vamp (1986). Jones’s legacy of extraordinary sound and style endures.
